Copper Baths: The Ultimate Bathroom Statement

Copper baths have stood the test of time – evolving in design and significance through changes in culture, society and craftsmanship, all-the-while maintaining their reputation as symbols of luxury and sophistication. While the history of the copper bath dates back to ancient origins, the fundamental appeal of using this material as a bathing vessel has not changed throughout the ages. Benefits include:

Heat retention: Copper is known for its excellent heat retention and can maintain water temperature much longer than other materials.

Health & hygiene: From eras where cleanliness was difficult to maintain but highly valued, to the modern day where we are looking for the best ways to fight bacteria & mould, copper baths have stood the test of time with their natural antimicrobial traits.

Malleability: The metal is easy to shape into ornate designs which contributes to why copper is the ideal choice for crafting bathtubs, particularly in ancient societies with a lack of resources. When we look at modern-day craftsmanship, copper baths are still hand-made – each a unique work of art.

Things to consider when purchasing a copper bath:

Finish

Waxed

A wax finish seals the surface of the metal, therefore preventing it reacting with the air and developing a tarnish/patina. If you not wish the patina to develop, the wax will need to be re-applied after installation and again after 4-6 weeks. As wax builds up on the surface the need to continue doing so will lessen over time.

Unwaxed

Unwaxed metal surfaces will naturally develop a deep rich brown patina over time. We would recommend Autosol metal polish as a suitable product to maintain an untarnished finish. With un-waxed nickel plated finishes, you must not leave damp towels/flannels on the nickel surface as they will permanently damage it.

Caring for your bath

Unwaxed Copper & Nickel

Clean with warm soapy water and a nonabrasive cloth and dry immediately after use. Avoid dripping taps, sharp objects, the use of abrasive products and harsh chemicals. Maintain the polished finish with the use of a metal cleaner in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions as and when required.

Waxed Copper & Nickel

Clean with warm soapy water and a nonabrasive cloth. Dry immediately after use. Avoid dripping taps, sharp objects, the use of abrasive products and harsh chemicals. To maintain the waxed finish reapply a suitable wax every 4-6 weeks following the manufacturer’s instructions.
