About Hurlingham

Hurlingham is a specialist manufacturer of handcrafted, bespoke freestanding baths and bathroom products. They focus on combining traditional craftsmanship with creative design using high-quality materials such as cast iron, copper, brass and stainless steel.

What Is A Cast Iron Bath?

Cast iron baths typically weigh under 200kg, but when they first rose to popularity in the early 1900s, you could expect an average weight of around 500kg. However, thanks to advancements in manufacturing, the cast iron bath is now a viable option for the modern home – finished with a high-quality enamel coating for added protection and longevity along with customisable exterior options to suit a range of spaces.

Why We Recommend Cast Iron Baths

  • Longevity – the durability of cast iron baths means that you can be rest assured they will stand the test of time. Hurlingham offers a lifetime guarantee with a purchase of their products.
  • Customisation – you can select an exterior bath colour against your personal style preference.
  • Heat Retention – cast iron is an excellent conductor – the material retains its heat exceptionally well which means relaxing soaks will remain warmer for longer.

Top 5 Cleaning Tips for Cast Iron Baths

  1. Ensure good ventilation before you start: Always make sure your bathroom is well-ventilated when cleaning your cast iron bathtub. Opening windows or using an extractor fan helps disperse strong odours from products such as vinegar or dish soap, makes cleaning more comfortable, and helps prevent excess moisture that can shorten the life of your bathroom fixtures.
  2. Avoid abrasive cleaning products: Never use abrasive materials such as steel wool, scouring pads, or powdered cleaners. These products can scratch and dull the enamel finish over time. Once the finish is damaged, it becomes more prone to staining, grime buildup, and hard-water deposits, which are much harder to remove.
  3. Clean regularly to prevent build-up: Consistency is key to maintaining your cast iron bathtub. A quick wipe-down after each use removes soap residue and water marks before they harden. This simple habit helps preserve the enamel finish and reduces the need for frequent deep cleans.
  4. Treat stubborn stains gently: For tougher marks or stains, use a soft sponge with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. This method is effective at lifting dirt without damaging the enamel surface. Be sure to rinse thoroughly afterward to remove any remaining soap residue.
  5. Deep clean with a soaking method: For a more thorough clean, fill the tub with hot water and add a small amount of washing-up liquid, mixing it evenly. Allow the tub to soak for approximately 30 minutes, then drain and wipe down the surface with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse well to leave the finish clean and residue-free.

Important note:
Avoid acidic cleaners and many standard bathroom cleaning products, as they can gradually wear down the enamel. Over time, these products may cause more harm than good, reducing both the appearance and longevity of your cast iron bathtub.
